Marina Rosenfeld & Christoph Cox Lecture  
This lecture was recorded November 20, 2014, in Timken Lecture Hall on the San Francisco campus of California College of the Arts as part of the Graduate Studies Lecture Series. Composer, sound and visual artist Marina Rosenfeld and philosopher Christoph Cox, who is completing a monograph about sound art, experimental music and metaphysics, present their recent projects as a prelude to a broader conversation about their respective interests in contemporary music making. Rosenfeld and Cox will structure their interaction through the use of a set of randomized keywords, including suggestions from the audience. Rosenfeld’s avant-garde work challenges accepted musical norms, deemphasizing the individual to highlight the dynamic relationship between the performers, orchestra, audience, and the music itself. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and her work has been included in major group exhibitions such as the 2002 and 2008 Whitney Biennial. Her collaboration with vocalist Annette Henry (a.k.a Warrior Queen) in 2012 resulted in P.A. Hard Love, a universally acclaimed album project recorded in Kingston, Jamaica. Cox is professor of philosophy at Hampshire College. He has authored numerous books, contributes regularly to journals and magazines including Artforum, The Wire, and the Journal of Visual Culture, and has written catalogue essays for venues ranging from MoMA, NY to Berlin’s Akademie der Künste. In 2008-9, Cox co-curated the exhibition Every Sound You Can Imagine, which explored cross-fertilization between musicians and visual artists, revealing the vital connections between experimental sound art and cutting-edge visual art. About CCA's 2014-15 Graduate Lecture Series Entitled Sound & Vision, the 2014–15 Graduate Studies Lecture Series, examines the rich landscape of contemporary music and sound art. In performances, audio lectures, and conversations an international roster of some of today’s most compelling and innovative practitioners and thinkers will present projects and discuss ideas and histories of interest in the aural field.
